Drigg Is A Digg-like Drupal Module Which Can Import Your Pligg Data!

You don't understand the above sentence? Hahaha! If there are some words you don't get I'll explain briefly, but if you get all the sentence's words then you might want to try Drigg right now on a new Drupal install...

About Digg:

Digg is a place for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by their users. You won't find editors at Digg - they're here to provide a place where people can collectively determine the value of content and they're changing the way people consume information online.

How do they do this? Everything on Digg - from news to videos to images to Podcasts - is submitted by their community (that would be you). Once something is submitted, other people see it and Digg what they like best. If your submission rocks and receives enough Diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of their visitors to see.

And it doesn't stop there. Because Digg is all about sharing and discovery, there's a conversation that happens around the content. They're here to promote that conversation and provide tools for their community to discuss the topics that they're passionate about. By looking at information through the lens of the collective community on Digg, you'll always find something interesting and unique. They're committed to giving every piece of content on the web an equal shot at being the next big thing.

About Pligg:

Pligg is an Open source Social Networking Content Management System (CMS) Combining social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication and a democratic editorial system enables users to collaboratively submit and vote articles. It was influenced by the extremely popular English technology site digg, where when a user submits a news article it is placed in the "upcoming" area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page.

About Drupal:

Drupal is in my opinion the very best free and open source modular content management system (CMS) written in the programming language PHP. Drupal, like many modern CMSs, allows the system administrator to organize the content, customize the presentation, automate administrative tasks, and manage site visitors and contributors. Although there is a sophisticated programming interface, most tasks can be accomplished with little or no programming. Drupal is sometimes described as a "web application framework", as its capabilities extend from content management to enabling a wide range of services and transactions.

About Drigg:

Drigg is a powerful Drupal module that allows you to create Digg and Pligg-like web sites. Unlike other Drupal-based solutions, Drigg only have very few dependencies. Developed in less than 3 months at the end of 2007, by one programmer, Tony Mobily, it required him 11-12 hours a day, 7 days a week for over 10 weeks. The result is the very first Digg-like module for Drupal after years of "talking about it" within the community, it took total dedication from one experienced programmer to achieve an astounding result that we now can freely enjoy.

I don't know what you think of it, but to me that's very good news, because I already used Pligg to create 2 sites (one in english, the other in french) and I did it only because there was no real other option. Drupal which is always my choice when creating a new web project, wasn't an option when doing a Digg-like site. Pligg was a better option despite :

  • being in beta for as long as it existed
  • having poor user and content management features compared to Drupal
  • fearing heavy load because of unoptimized SQL queries
  • poor handling of spam
  • its template system is Smarty and is not as easy to use as Drupal's PHPTemplate.

Anyway, Pligg was nice as long as it was the best option available, but thanks to Tony Mobily, we can safely come back to our beloved Drupal. And guess what? As I wrote in this post's title, there is an import script to get your old Pligg install into a brand new Drigg install... Got to love Tony for creating YET ANOTHER REASON TO CHOOSE DRUPAL OVER JOOMLA! :-)
